Buffalo Hunting

When our nephew, Sean, heard Kent was going Buffalo hunting he offered his 'quad' and his special gun. Not that Kent was planning to shoot a buffalo as he didn't have a limited entry - he was just going along to help. The gun was more for target practicing and protection as there are ferocious Grizzly Bears - big, hungry Grizzly Bears - in the Pink Mountain area.

Luckily Kent only ran into Grizzly tracks in the snow. When he put his boot into the track it was 2 inches shorter. Yikes. Perhaps I should buy him a gift certificate for Christmas for Tactical Outdoors as he's certainly enjoyed this hunting trip! I think he will apply for a Buffalo limited entry next year and will need his own equipment.

511TacticalOutdoors.com sells everything from this galco holster (think Don Johnston in Miami Vice) to police gear. They also carry a full line of tactical clothing, watches, flashlights and vests as well as books and dvd's. Check out their various lines and equipment and note the Free Shipping on orders over $50.00.

Dawson Creek

Kent phoned today from Dawson Creek which is situated at Mile 0 on the Alaska Highway. He and Terry (his hunting partner) did not plan a stop there, but the truck is having fuel pump problems.

They are both exhausted and sore from their big Buffalo hunt yesterday, but elated to have found a herd of 50 - 60 Buffalo. Terry had a 'limited entry' tag for a Buffalo and he filled it yesterday - they are on their way home with Buffalo burgers!

Kent has lots of pictures for me to share - of wildlife, mountains, snow and highway markers - but NO Buffalo pictures. Next year he has to take my small pocket size camera with him as his wonderful SLR is so bulky and large to carry on a quad or snowmobile.

At Home on Holiday

Sometimes hotels just annoy me... have you ever had your luggage go astray when the bell desk sends it to the WRONG room, then can't find it? Aaaackkk.. I had to deal with that once and let me tell you I was stressed. I've also had to request a room change due to nasty odors and uncleanliness. Hotels can be so unfriendly at times and so impersonal.

Holiday Apartments might be worth a try for someone as picky as I! I like the idea of staying in a place which offers all the amenities and comfort of home. Imagine arriving to find the fridge fully stocked, then being able to cook your own meals, but still being offered the luxury of laundry services and housekeeping in a fully serviced apartment. Sounds good to me!

JMPtravel.com offers apartment holidays for every season and every reason. Don't see what you are looking for? Just ask - they'll do their best to serve your wishes. If you like spa packages, they specialize or if you're looking for a 'hen party' getaway you'll find the perfect apartment.

I like the idea of seeing Paris in the winter, without crowds of tourists pushing and shoving and waiting in line at museums, art galleries or restaurants. Staying in an apartment in Paris would be a wonderful experience giving me a taste for the day to day living rather than the tourist oriented fare served up in impersonal hotels.

Yes, I'm ready to try a luxury apartment holiday!

Health Care Canada vs USA

The topic foremost in American minds seems to be health care and as a Canadian, I've been asked twice in the last week how our system works and how much we pay for health care.

Kent and I pay $96.00 per month as we do not have an employer who covers our medical and we do not have company pensions. Many people have complete coverage through their employers or as part of their pensions. If your income is under a certain level, you qualify for Government assistance.

We have Walk in Clinics where we may see a doctor without an appointment with perhaps a short wait of half an hour. We have a 'family doctor' and may make appointments with him - and usually get an appointment within a week. An appointment with a specialist such as an Opthalmologist is usually 6 months or more wait time.

Yes, if you need some types of operations you will be put on a waiting list. Emergencies get bumped up the ladder. If you are in hospital and require an operation but it is not an emergency, you are sent home to wait. If someone else, who's doctor declares him/her not fit to go home stays in hospital, they will take precendence over the person on the waiting list. Sometimes, it's who you know and what you know...

Our health care system in Canada might sound very attractive but it does have flaws, so be careful what you wish/vote for! Freedom is not Free and neither is Health Care. Someone has to pay - and your Health Care budget will ultimately come out of YOUR pocket.

In British Columbia we pay much higher income tax and we pay Federal and Provincial Sales Tax. Many of my purchases have an added 13 percent in Sales Tax - ouch that hurts.

This article reminded me of the questions I was asked recently. Our Health Care budget is 160.1 billion dollars and we have a population of over 33 million which averages out to nearly $5,000.00 per person per year. You do the math for your USA population!

This is my opinion and certainly does not contain all the facts. My opinion of our Health Care system has never been anything but great - but then, I've never been in the position of being on a wait list...

PostieCon Las Vegas

Which two are similar and which one is different? Isn't Sleepy Bear adorable - nearly as adorable as Mr Fab, huh? Travel Lodge donated one for each postie gift bag!

Drew, Karen, Mr Fab and Colleen (the Fab Four) are on stage right now being interviewed on stage by Ted, discussing their views and tools for successful blogging.

It's so interesting sitting in the room, learning from the sessions, hearing the speakers ideas, taking part in the live Meebo chat and Twitterering while blogging. Cool!!!

Cranky Traveler

Kent and I were up at 6:30 Friday morning and heading to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal for a quick trip to Vancouver Island.

Our first stop was Sydney to have lunch with Auntie Nell and Jean. Rollie came home from work for a quick visit and Gaie, Glenn and Cooper dropped by as well. We all enjoyed soup, bunwiches and a rich chocolate brownie – yum. Here is a photo of Auntie Nell and me

and the rest of motley crew!

We headed 'up island' to Campbell River - a 3 ½ hour drive. The Inland Island Highway is beautiful with a 110 km speed limit (70 mph) and the conditions were great until we neared CR where the rain began. I napped on and off the entire way! We made a couple of stops for a few supplies and arrived at Jill and Jon's about 5:30.

Their daughter, Spencer (our great niece) was celebrating her second birthday. At 2, Spencer had more fun pulling the wrapping paper from her gifts than anything. We bought her a cute little Dora sleeping bag with an air mattress attached. Arrrrrgggg.... did I read the package – nope – and there were no batteries supplied, so we couldn't try it out.

Spencer's Grandma was there as well and cooked a lovely dinner for us all. We enjoyed a few drinks and snacks while waiting for Sean and Lee-Ann to arrive from Port McNeill. We never did get around to the cute 'Tinkerbell' birthday cake unfortunately as Spencer was rather hyper already without the added sugar. Of course we all stayed up too late, but had a great time catching up on family news.

This morning Sean, Jon and Kent transferred Sean's 'qaud' from Sean's truck to Jon's truck to Kent's truck (so it would face forward in the bed of the truck) then we loaded up our 'stuff' and the borrowed elephant gun and bullets Sean loaned to Kent and we all drove to the local gun store in CR for a few more supplies. Kent is going Buffalo hunting at Pink Mountain, in November with a friend and is getting prepared!

We said goodbye about noon and drove 'down island', stopping briefly at Miracle Beach. Kent had never been there and it's been 45 years since I've been there, so we parked, walked the short path to the beach and as Kent was reading the signs and looking out at the water I picked up a few pretty rocks, took a couple of photos (until my battery died) and remembered the last time I'd stood on the beach with my Auntie Alice. She loved to go to the beach to pick up smooth rounded rocks to make lamp bases and planters. She also hunted for interesting driftwood to make lamp bases and I reminisced with Kent about the time I spent visiting with her.

We then headed to Duke Point to catch the ferry for the 2 hour trip to Tsawwassen. The wind is blowing and the water looked awfully rough but we'll be heading in to the wind most of the way so I shouldn't be too seasick... It will be around 6 before we are home and are heading out again in the morning.

Pop has been staying (in his motorhome) at Graeme & Lise's in Vernon for the last two weeks. The moose meat has been butchered and packaged and is now ready for pickup so we are going to get it, and Pop. Graeme and Lise invited us for Thanksgiving turkey dinner, so they are preparing it for tomorrow afternoon – even though our Thanksgiving has come and gone. It will be our CANUSA Thanksgiving dinner!

Monday we will load the moose meat and drive Pop's motorhome and Kent's truck back home. Time is getting a bit tight, but we need to return the motorhome to Egmont, and bring Pop's truck down to our place. Something might have to give here, as I have a hair appointment on Wednesday and do not intend to miss it... hmmm... it might be a very quick trip!

Crystal and I leave Thursday afternoon for Las Vegas and will be home on Sunday the 11th and Kent will leave Monday the 12th for his elephant buffalo hunting trip – if not a day or 2 sooner. He will be gone 10 days to 2 weeks, depending on the buffalo and the weather. His friend Terry has a 'limited entry' for a buffalo (apparently there are 6 limited entries awarded each year, so it's a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity to receive one (although this is Terry's second). He should be buying lottery tickets as well shouldn't he?

So, are you tired hearing all this? Me too! Life goes along so quietly and smoothly for months then bam, all hell breaks loose and we're busier than a one legged man in a butt kicking contest. I need a nap... traveling makes me tired and cranky.

Not quite this cranky, but close! This was poor little Spencer this morning when I tried to put her princess crown on her head. She has a runny nose and cold and just wasn't up for my foolishness and photo session after a big birthday and night of partying!

Weekly Tech Email Newsletter

I receive a few interesting weekly email newsletters and specials from various sites, such as airfare and holiday specials and discounts for stores I frequent, and then there are others I never even bother to open. Sure, I should unsubscribe.

Some newsletters I truly appreciate, such as TechBargains.com which offers dell coupons, as I'm very interested in their products and news of new products and special promotional deals. I do plan to buy a new laptop in the near future and Kent's PC is crashing daily so it won't be long until we have to replace that dinosaur as well.

I'm not especially computer savvy and have a difficult time following all the high tech jargon, which makes choosing a new computer very difficult as everyone has an 'idea' and a hot new item to sell. I love reading short articles or 'tips' if the headlines interest me and sound valuable. Patience, understanding buying online and all it's many nuances, using a price search engine and comparison shopping are great shopping tips.

There are many ways to save money when you are buying a big ticket item and I'm learning a few tricks and tips from TechBargains.com so I will be ready to make an informed decision once my laptop bites the dust.
